Haiti Northwest

Approximately 500,000 Haitians fled the devastated capital city of Port-Au-Prince and relocated to other parts of the country after the January 12th earthquake. In the Northwest and Artibonite departments, the population increased by 10%. The same percentage arrived where the program’s cooperatives are located. 228 families, or 869 individuals, came to live with family members in the cooperatives, which previously had a total of about 10,000 individuals. Activities in 2010 focused on providing additional credit to the new arrivals and training to support all cooperative members. At the same time, the cooperatives were affected by cholera and Hurricane Tomas, which caused widespread destruction. Additional credit for women’s businesses and agricultural purposes, management training and new cooperative centers strengthen and grow the cooperatives to help members make their families and communities more food-secure. Check out this video about a recent trip by FRB staff and volunteers to the Haiti-Northwest program.
